Afe Babalola University Green Hydrogen Hub

The Afe Babalola University Green Hydrogen Hub is a pioneering integrated clean energy and sustainable agriculture initiative designed to position ABUAD as a leading centre for green hydrogen innovation, climate-smart infrastructure, and applied energy research in Africa.

Developed within a dynamic university and agro-industrial ecosystem, the project will combine renewable energy generation, hydrogen technologies, sustainable agriculture, and digital energy management into a modular and scalable energy hub.

In its first phase, the hub will integrate MW-scale solar PV, battery energy storage, an electrolyser, hydrogen storage systems, fuel cells, advanced Energy Management Systems, and heat and oxygen valorisation. The system will supply clean electricity to the university campus, while excess solar power that would otherwise be curtailed will be used to produce green hydrogen. This hydrogen will then be stored and reconverted into electricity through fuel cells during periods of low solar generation, grid instability, or increased energy demand.

In its second phase, the electrolyser capacity will be scaled up to increase green hydrogen production. The hydrogen will then be further converted into green ammonia and ammonium sulphate fertiliser for direct application across ABUAD's farms, agro-processing facilities, and research programmes. This creates a clear pathway from clean energy production to sustainable agriculture, supporting local fertiliser production, food security, and industrial decarbonisation.

Beyond energy generation, the Green Hydrogen Hub will serve as a platform for interdisciplinary education, applied research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. It will support student training, technical capacity building, and practical research at the intersection of renewable energy, hydrogen, agriculture, climate resilience, and sustainable industrial development.

The project is being developed in partnership with Afe Babalola University, CrossAfrique Hydrogen, Dara-Manihot Industries and Farms, Soventix Hybrid Nigeria Ltd, and Green Power Brains GmbH in Germany. Fundraising advisory support is provided by GET.invest, while GIZ Nigeria-H2 Diplo provides support through industry connections and technical assistance.

The Afe Babalola University Green Hydrogen Hub will significantly reduce the university's long-term energy costs, improve energy reliability, and establish ABUAD as a flagship demonstration site for integrated clean energy systems in sub-Saharan Africa. It will also provide a replicable model for universities, hospitals, agro-industrial clusters, and industrial parks seeking to combine renewable power, hydrogen storage, sustainable agriculture, and climate-smart infrastructure.
